In The Closet with Yvette Fielding

The Former Blue Peter presenter lives in gothic black to film Most Haunted, but the ghost of Dior lives on in her wardrobe.
Words and Styling by Sarah Taylor

Back in the 1980s, Yvette was the youngest ever presenter of Blue Peter at just 18 years old. Now 37, she is best known for Most Haunted, the cult supernatural series she presents on Living TV. Yvette lives in Cheshire with her husband Karl and their children William, 11 and Mary, 6.

How do you describe your style?
“Soft gothic” for TV and jeans and jumpers at home.

What colours, shapes and styles suit you best?
I like bright colours, especially crimson, pink and jade green; and I love the styles of the 1940s – fitted jackets with tapered waists and full skirts really seem to suit my hourglass figure. But I’m very casual away from work and tend to live in jeans, which I wear with a chunky jumper or cardigan and timberland boots.

Who is your style icon?
Any women lucky enough to wear Christian Dior’s New Look in the late 1940s. I love that head-to-toe accessorised look – slobbing around in a tracksuit was unheard of. It’s a shame we’re all so casual today.

Do you have a beauty secret?
Haemorrhoid cream really works wonders on bags under the eyes!

How do you dress on “fat” days?
A pair of jeans and one of my husband’s sweatshirts.

Is there anything about your body that you dislike? If so, how do you disguise it?
I have a lot of problems with my skin. I have vitiligo – a pigmentation disorder – so I’m very pale and I also suffer from a condition called urticaria which causes a very sore, itchy rash around my eyes and mouth. I have a very good make=-up artist for TV, and when I’m not working I just hide behind a huge pair of sunglasses.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
Not very long. Most mornings I do the school run wearing pyjamas, an old jumper and boots, although I always cover up my spots and run a comb through my hair so I don’t scare the children.

Do you have a stylist?
Yes, I found a great woman called Leigh James who now looks after my wardrobe. I don’t have a clue about modern fashion.

Is there an “old favourite” that you turn to in a wardrobe crisis?
My pink outfit - a cropped jacket and sequinned skirt with matching shoes and bag from Hobbs,

What is the oldest item in your wardrobe?
A black leather jacket that I’ve had since the 1980s. I was a huge fan of the heavy metal band Def Leppard and I wore it constantly with a pair of cowboy boots complete with silver spurs.

Do you clear out your wardrobe each season?
No – once a lifetime is enough.

Have you ever made a fashion faux pas?
Plenty – I was the first person ever to wear a shell suit on British TV.

What is the most crushing remark anyone has ever made about your clothes?
Silence is worse.

What is your most successful party outfit?
A nun costume I wore to a themed party to celebrate the end of the first series of Most Haunted.

Do you own more day wear than evening wear?
It’s probably about equal as a lot of the clothes I wear on Most Haunted could be classed as evening wear – they are all quite flamboyant.

How much of your wardrobe is black?
The majority. I wear it for every show.

Do you have a favourite LBD?
No. I can’t stand wearing black when I’m not filming – I wear it all the time for work.

Have you ever had anything made to measure?
The Annie Lennox outfit I wore on Stars in Their Eyes. It was exquisitely made. The beads in the choker were taken from a tutu worn by the ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn.

What is your favourite designer shop?
A little boutique called Fabric in Monton, just outside Manchester.

What is your favourite high-street shop?
Karen Millen and Zara for my work clothes and River Island for my casual wear.

What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe?
A £500 black velvet jacket that I bought to wear on Most Haunted.

What is your sexiest outfit?
I once wore a red backless dress and it was only when I saw the photos that I realised it was almost completely transparent.

What do you wear in bed?
Pyjamas in the winter, antique white cotton night gowns in summer.

Do you wear a G-string or briefs?
A G-string if I must, but I prefer apple-catchers.

Do you wear a bikini or swimsuit?
Swimsuit.

How many handbags do you own?
Hundreds.

Do you have more shoes than clothes?
I used to but I lost a lot when I moved house – it’s very upsetting.

Do you wear silver or gold jewellery?
Silver – it suits my very pale skin.

Do you wear diamonds?
I love them.

What make of sunglasses do you wear?
Reactolite Rapide – my eyes are very sensitive to changes in light.

Do you wear then in winter or at night?
Yes – I have to be quite careful even when it’s quite overcast, so I end up wearing them all the time.

How much have you spent on clothes this month?
About £300.

What is the last thing you bought in Harvey Nichols?
A fruit smoothie- everything I liked was far too expensive.

What is the last thing you bought from Marks & Spencer?
A pink V-neck sweater.

What is your fashion must-have for this season?
It’s got to be a pair of black stilettos with pointed toes.

Which is your favourite clothes shop abroad?
Zara in Spain.

Do you have a fashion address book secret?
My stylist, Leigh James. Since I’ve had her I’ve felt far less stressed about clothes.

What article of clothing would you save from a burning house?
My Wedding Dress.
