Ciarán’s diverse research background related
to the controversial area of Hauntings began with early
membership of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) and
interviewing eyewitnesses to alleged apparitions. It continued
in a more scientific vein, in the US, where, in 1994, he
graduated with a Liberal Arts degree at Washington College,
majoring in Music & Psychology. There he completed an
honors thesis on paranormal experiences in conjunction with
a representative from the Institute of Parapsychology (now
Rhine Research Center). The thesis collated experiences
and beliefs concerned with the paranormal, including apparitions
and poltergeist. Following on from the thesis, Ciarán
explored various aspects of parapsychology (i.e. mediumship,
psychic readings etc.) also examining psychic criminology
as part of his MSc. He returned to the Rhine Research Center
in 2000 (awarded the Rao Scholarship) where he pursued further
understanding of academic parapsychology. Further interest
in more field-based research into hauntings culminated in
training by ASSAP (Association for the Scientific Study
of Anomalous Phenomena) and an investigation into, the now
closed, Oxford Prison (site of filming of Spy Game).
Ciarán has recently received his Doctorate entitled
‘Assessing the content of advice from practitioners
claiming paranormal ability,’ (focusing on psychics
and mediums) at the University of Hertfordshire. The PhD
is supervised by both a parapsychologist and counsellor.
During his time at University of Hertfordshire, Ciarán
was fortunate enough to be involved in several Perrott-Warrick
Research Unit projects (e.g. the famous ‘ghost’
projects at Hampton Court and Edinburgh), also taking time
off for other spontaneous cases and unusual assignments
(including a dream project, and exorcism research). Additionally
he became involved with the Infrasonic Project which examined
the link between low frequency sound and, amongst other
things, allegedly haunted locations. Currently he is employed
at Liverpool Hope University College as a lecturer/researcher
in psychology. There he specialises in teaching and conducting
research in three areas: Music Psychology, Investigative
Psychology and Parapsychology.
